As the clock struck noon in Doha on December 6th, so too hit the deadline for National Priorities Research Program (NPRP) grant proposals from researchers in Qatar and their collaborators worldwide. Now in its fifth cycle, the NPRP attracted 1,460 Letters of Intent, which resembled the number from last year and thus reflected the stringent eligibility criteria put in place by QNRF to ensure the highest quality research output, according to Noor Al-Merekhi, NPRP Program Manager at QNRF.

"The number reflects a healthy, wide-spread interest in our programs, detailing work to be based in Qatar and in collaboration with labs from a multitude of countries," said Al-Merekhi. "We view this as a sign of maturation."

Recently, QNRF held a Research Office (RO) Workshop for all the submitting institutions inside Qatar that have proposals submitted for NPRP 5th cycle, Al-Merekhi said. The workshop especially targeted newly registered ROs and was conducted by Mahmoud Talaat, Senior Manager of Operations at QNRF. The workshop offered an introduction about the RO's role in vetting process and what is expected from them. It additionally featured case studies, a tutorial on the RO online channel and a Q&A session, she said.

Proposals received are now in a screening process. Fifth cycle award announcements are expected to take place in May of 2012.

The NPRP is the flagship funding Program of QNRF. It is announced annually to fund successful proposals up to US$ 350,000 per year for research project periods of one, two or three years.
