Funding opportunities for research into Arab families.

QNRF and the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding and announced their collaboration for the launch of a new QNRF-DIFI joint-funded research grant focused on the Arab family.

Called “Osra”, which means family in Arabic, it will assist in the development of evidence-based policies and programs to promote the well-being of the Arab family by looking at marriage and family structure, parenting, family-work balance and family laws and practices across the region.

Dr Abdul Sattar Al-Taie, Executive Director at QNRF said “We are delighted to collaborate with DIFI on this new research program since the Osra grant addresses an area that has, in a large part, been left unexplored in the Arab region”.

Established in 2006, the same year as QNRF, DIFI’s vision is to be recognised as a global knowledge leader on issues facing the Arab family. By addressing the community’s immediate social needs through research, policy, and outreach DIFI supports Qatar Foundation’s mission to foster a progressive society.

To qualify for Osra funding, a research project must be managed by a Lead Principal Investigator, with a doctoral qualification, who has at least three peer-reviewed scientific publications in a relevant field, and is residing, and affiliated to, an institution in Qatar or another Arab country.

The Conference & Workshop Sponsorship Program (CWSP)

The last few months have witnessed the diverse nature of QNRF CWSP sponsored events held in Qatar. As a vehicle to promote Qatar’s evolving research ecosystem QNRF’s sponsorship is often the catalyst that allows the host organisation to promote Qatar as a venue for research-based international conferences and workshops. Here are a few examples of events recently sponsored by QNRF.

A conference organised by Qatar University and entitled “Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages” (TESOL), saw an excellent turnout from the academic and commercial community, including several well-known educational publishers. As usual, QNRF’s booth was in place to offer advice and guidance to those interested in pursuing research and who may be looking for funding.

“Fresh Global Media Players: Redistributing Communication Power” organised by Northwestern University Qatar, looked at the radical transformation that the news and entertainment the landscape has undergone over the past decade. Following a presentation given by Dr Abdulnasser, the Deputy Executive Director of QNRF, the keynote speech, given by Yaser Bishr, Executive Director of Strategy and Development, Al Jazeera Media Network, focussed on how profitable it is for social media sites to get free access to material generated by professional writers and how, in his opinion, those authors should share in the revenues generated.

Something that we will all, unfortunately, experience at some time in our lives – pain – was the focus of the “Qatar International Pain Conference”. Organised by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), the symposium saw a number of world renowned experts in the field gather in Doha to discuss acute and chronic pain management and establish a strategy for the clinical management, scientific investigation and analysis of pain supported by a solid base of evidence.

HMC also hosted the QNRF sponsored workshop “Transportation Health Research In Children of Qatar”. The international working group, including experts from Canada and Australia, to name but two countries taking part, got together to promote how they could contribute to safer roads, sharing their experiences of strategies designed to minimise exposure of young people to the extremely serious risks posed by dangerous driving.

Such QNRF-sponsored events, which span all disciplines, act as a framework, fostering collaboration between researchers in Qatar and their global counterparts, offering valuable networking opportunities and reducing any sense of isolation the local research community may experience, whilst simultaneously showcasing Qatar’s superb, award-winning facilities, such as the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). They also offer undergraduate and postgraduate students in Qatar exposure to the importance of research when creating an advanced society and serve to highlight, to international academic or professional institutions, the attraction of hosting their periodic conferences in Qatar.

2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™

As Qatar gears itself up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™, QNRF is very proud to announce its partnership in the development of “The Challenge 22 Innovation Award” - less formally known as Challenge 22 – a new, competitive platform, developed by the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, QNRF and Silatech. Borne out of a desire to celebrate the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar™ as a regional event, Challenge 22 was established to engage the region’s innovators and to provide them with a forum to think big whilst exploring solutions that could directly benefit this world-renowned event.

Most importantly, it will build a lasting legacy in the Middle East by nurturing and developing promising ideas.

For the inaugural launch of the award the three key themes that address national and global challenges faced when hosting major sports events were revealed to be Sustainability, Event Experience and Sports and Health.

Successful applicants will be provided with an invaluable mentor network made up of research, academic and business leaders that will assist them in taking their ideas from proposal to proof of concept and up to six winning teams-will also receive an award.


Health leaders from more than 80 countries gathered in Qatar for two days in February at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), a platform for learning about the latest research, ideas and innovations, some of which will have the potential to revolutionize the future of global healthcare. Furthermore, WISH is an event dedicated to capturing and disseminating the best evidence-based ideas that will save both lives and much needed resources, on a global scale. Visitors to QNRF’s booth were keen to explore how they could harness the power of collaboration to overcome the world’s most urgent healthcare challenges and represented a diverse group of stakeholders from policymakers and healthcare providers to researchers, academics, and industry leaders.
